Sickle Cell Trait is NOT a Disease.

Sickle Cell Trait is different from Sickle Cell Anemia.

People with the Sickle Cell Trait are generally healthy.

Sickle Cell Trait will never turn into Sickle Cell Anemia.

Sickle Cell Trait is inherited through genes from the mother and father.

People with Sickle Cell Trait have hemoglobin type AS.

People with Sickle Cell Anemia have hemoglobin type SS.

If both parents have Sickle Cell Trait (AS), there is 1 chance in 4 that their baby will have Sickle Cell Anemia (SS).

1 in 12 African-Americans have Sickle Cell Trait.

People of various nationalities have Sickle Cell Trait.

Anyone considering having children should have a blood test to determine their hemoglobin type. Prenatal diagnosis for Sickle Cell Trait is available
